CRICKET WEB BEST NEW WRITER 2015

Author of GOLD TOP: THE JOHN LUND STORY, KEEP TURNING LEFT, THE CHAMPION BAND and   KINGS OF THE OVAL

My first stock car meeting was in 1987 at Odsal Stadium in Bradford. My dad told me that I had to pick a driver to support. I didn't know any of them, so I asked him for some suggestions. He pointed at a car with the number 53 on it and said 'that's John Lund, he's quite good!'

I'm a voracious reader. I finish at least one book a week, sometimes two or three. I try to read as widely as possible because it's good to see different writing styles. It helps me look at my own work with a critical eye.

I love to travel, although it's normally my wife who  books the holidays. If I could book my dream trip, it would be to follow the path of the 1859 cricket tour to North America, including Montreal, New York, Philadelphia and Niagara Falls.

If I had to pick three desert island books I would probably go with the classics: Catch-22, Dracula and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

An author needs to have a dependable routine. It's easy to get distracted when you work at home. I tend to go to the gym first thing in the morning, then spend the rest of the morning researching, writing and editing. I have a long break for lunch and to catch up with odd jobs, then it's back to writing in the afternoon.

I'm a bit of a closet birder. My study window looks out over a little bit of woodland, and I'm occasionally put off writing by a treecreeper, nuthatch or woodpecker!
